Joshua Garnett Still Out, Position in Jeopardy?

Second-year offensive guard Joshua Garnett (knee) missed yet another day of practice after banging knees with a teammate last week.

It wasn’t expected to be serious, but Garnett — who is in the midst of a battle with free-agent pickup Jonathan Cooper for the starting right guard spot — continues to be absent, which seemingly frustrated Kyle Shanahan.

“It’s tough to make this team and do it if you’re not out there,” Shanahan told reporters Wednesday. “I was a little surprised Garnett didn’t make it today. I’d be more surprised if he’s not out there tomorrow.”

Well, Shanahan is “more surprised” with Garnett’s continued absence, apparently.

Garnett missed all of 2017 with a knee injury. After a relatively forgettable rookie season under the previous regime of former general manager Trent Baalke, the former first-round pick’s hold on a roster spot is precarious.

It’s possible, perhaps smart the 49ers consider moving Garnett as soon as feasible. His stock value isn’t going to get any higher. And if he loses out the position battle to fellow guards Jonathan Cooper or Mike Person, Garnett’s value will be almost nonexistent.

In addition to Garnett, defensive back Jimmie Ward and rookie linebacker Fred Warner sat Thursday’s practice out with injuries, per NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco. And depth tight end Cole Wick was also carted off the field with an apparent knee injury.
