No. 4: Cornerback

Well, this is going to be an interesting one.

Ahkello Witherspoon, Richard Sherman and K’Waun Williams will be the three on top of the mountain (Sherman replacing the departed Dontae Johnson) and there is a lot of interest in whether or not a player can step up either to be the heir to Sherman when he moves on or to find themselves in a nickel corner spot.

Draftee watch

The 49ers have two rookies in their 2018 NFL Draft class in Tarvarius Moore and D.J. Reed.

Despite playing the same position on paper, they won’t be competing in OTAs for the same role. Moore is a convert from safety and is a big, physical player who will have first shot at being the understudy to Sherman.

Meanwhile, Reed is much smaller a corner and will be given a shot at playing time in the nickel roles.

Keep an eye on

Tarvarus McFadden.

A lot of people have drooled about him joining the team, but his football ability was much better than his production, and his poor game tape caused him to go undrafted.

That being said, McFadden could be a diamond in the rough if he works hard. He’ll have a perfect mentor in Sherman to help.
