8. R.W. McQuarters, Cornerback, Oklahoma State

Someone else said it best, so I’ll put it here:

"McQuarters was highly-regarded as the most versatile player in the 1998 NFL Draft. From playing cornerback, wide receiver, to kick-returner, McQuarters was supposed to be the next great cornerback for the next 10 years. However, that was never the case as McQuarters had trouble in pass-coverage resulting in him primarily returning punts during his tenure in San Francisco. A span that lasted from 1998-1999, McQuarters racked up 77 tackles, one interception, and 16 passes defensed."

Says it all really, doesn’t it?

The 49ers thought they had a versatile weapon with the 28th pick, but sadly it was a dud.
