No. 1: Trade up with the Cleveland Browns in Round 1

The 49ers may also have a trade with the Browns in the first round. With the ninth overall pick, San Francisco might decide to trade up especially to fix the lack of a pass rush.

To address that need, the Niners are likely targeting North Carolina State EDGE Bradley Chubb. According to 49ers beat writer Jennifer Lee Chan, San Francisco met with Chubb during the 2018 NFL Scouting Combine.

The problem for the 49ers is that Chubb is projected to be a top-five prospect in this year’s draft. Selecting at No. 9, the Niners may not be able to draft Chubb.

As a result, San Francisco might consider trading up to Cleveland’s fourth overall selection. But, it could cost the 49ers one of their future first-round picks.

Here is what the projected trade would look like between the two teams:

However, the 49ers should only trade with the Browns if Chubb is still available at No. 4.

If Chubb remains on the board, San Francisco may not hesitate to address one of its biggest needs heading into camp and pick up the top defensive player of this draft class.

In return, Cleveland would receive the 49ers’ 2018 and 2019 first-round picks. With this trade, the Browns may be able to address their need at linebacker or offensive line by trading back in this year’s draft.

Despite losing their first-round pick for next year, at least the 49ers would drastically improve their pass rush with Chubb lined up alongside Solomon Thomas and DeForest Buckner.
