NFL Draft: Ranking the 5 most overrated prospects for 2018
By Peter Panacy
Niner Noise listed UCLA offensive tackle Kolton Miller as a Round 1 prospect, going at No. 30 overall to the Minnesota Vikings. And CBS Sports currently lists him as the No. 28 overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft.
For Miller, this is more the case of need pushing a prospect to be overrated than anything else. While there is a decent crop of offensive line prospects in this year’s class, there are equally as many teams looking for O-line help this offseason.
All that does is force teams to reach a bit early to land some prospective talent.
NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein graded Miller as a fringe second- or early third-round draft pick. And Zierlein quoted one NFL scout as saying:
"His tape tells you exactly who he is. He’s big and he’s got decent length but he’s an average athlete and he will always be up and down depending on the guy across from him. I think he’ll start but I don’t see anything special. Some scouts like him a lot more than me so I don’t know."
One of the knocks against Miller is his lack of athleticism. At best, it appears as if he’ll be an adequate right tackle but not a true anchor point. And the lack of physicality and movement skills likely prevents him from ever shifting to the right side down the road.
Towards the middle of Round 2, or later, Miller would be an excellent pickup. But if there’s a buzz about him going in Round 1, that’s a reach.
