San Francisco 49ers: Quick-take NFL Draft mock after free agency opening
By Peter Panacy
The situation with linebacker Reuben Foster is precarious, and his legal and NFL repercussions carry influence here.
Should things get bad, and Foster is either off the team or suspended for a lengthy period, linebacker becomes a top need. Until that point, though, a quality pass-rusher is the 49ers’ biggest concern.
San Francisco inked former Los Angeles Chargers EDGE Jeremiah Attaochu on the second day of free agency. It’s a low-risk, possibly high-reward move and merely a one-year deal. But for a team that finished tied for 26th in sacks last year with 30, more work needs to be done.
Boston College’s Harold Landry is the best pure pass-rusher outside of NC State’s Bradley Chubb, who won’t fall to the Niners at No. 9 overall. The Niners would hope Landry emulates more of his 16.5-sack campaign in 2016 instead of what happened last year. But he had a solid NFL Scouting Combine, so there’s that to consider.
