The Mike Hughes pick helps the 49ers’ cornerback needs to an extent, but a bigger-bodied defensive back would also help.

And it isn’t as if corner depth was without test in San Francisco during 2017.

Penn State’s Christian Campbell has the size (6-foot-1, 191 pounds) to match up with big receiving targets on the outside. Not as much a ballhawk as Hughes, Campbell did register nine pass breakups his senior year and 19 total over his collegiate campaign.

From what I’ve seen of him, he’s far more reliable a prospect than Hughes at this point in both their careers. Yet his ceiling isn’t quite as high as that of Hughes.

But remember, San Francisco is looking for reliability at the position right off the bat. Campbell should be able to provide that until a player like Hughes is ready to contribute regularly. After that point, Campbell stays on as a solid depth option.
