No. 2: Linebacker Reuben Foster

Editor’s note: Reuben Foster was arrested on Feb. 12 in Los Gatos on charges of domestic violence and possession of an assault rifle. The 49ers’ reaction, decision regarding Foster and whatever eventual outcome is not yet known at this time.

The hype surrounding Reuben Foster was unreal when he got drafted at No. 31. He was one of the best linebacker prospects to come out in years, and the 49ers stole him at the end of the first round. Fans had high expectations for his abilities to become a great linebacker.

And when he was healthy, Foster met those expectations with ease.

In his rookie season, the ex-Alabama linebacker graded out as Pro Football Focus’ No. 4 linebacker and No. 59 in their top 101 players of 2017 list. And he proved that he deserved those rankings with his play on the field. Foster consistently stuffed the run by hitting through holes of the offensive line and getting to the ball carrier. And when Foster gets to the ball carrier, well, let’s just say that I sometimes have to feel bad for players getting tackled by Foster.

However, Foster’s violent style of play has some drawbacks. The amount of contact Foster endures by tackling high would leave horrific marks on any person’s body. As a result, the linebacker suffered injuries throughout the season.

If Foster changes his technique while still maintaining that physical level of play, he will stay healthy and have many more great seasons to come. That’s all he needs to work on over the offseason. And if he does, he could lead this team to a championship.
