Loser: Seattle Seahawks

Forget the fact the 49ers’ NFC West division rivals, the Seattle Seahawks, will have to face Jimmy Garoppolo at least twice a season the next five years. Seattle has a bigger problem to worry about.

Last December, Over the Cap’s Jason Fitzgerald broke down the five teams with the worst salary cap situations heading into 2018.

Not surprisingly, the Seahawks were among them.

The Seahawks have just over $14 million in cap space, per OTC. They can clear some space by cutting older, costlier players like defensive end Cliff Avril. But there are a number of soon-to-be free agents that will be asking for substantial raises in the near future.

Including quarterback Russell Wilson.

Wilson is signed through 2019 and has an annual yearly salary of $21.9 million. With two Super Bowls under his belt, including one Lombardi Trophy, the Seattle quarterback has more than a few reasons to ask for significantly more money than Garoppolo just received.

Meanwhile, the Seahawks aren’t exactly in the best position to afford it, meaning they’ll have to make some serious roster changes if they want to keep their star quarterback.
