Winner: Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo

Well, duh.

Despite starting only seven games, and just five with the Niners, Jimmy Garoppolo has suddenly emerged as the pinnacle player of the NFL.

Financially, at least.

The exact details of the contract aren’t exactly known just yet. But Garoppolo commands the NFL’s biggest contract after he helped turn a one-win 49ers team into a possible playoff contender heading into 2018.

Five years means he won’t have to worry about job security. And the fact San Francisco overhauled its roster with an emphasis on youth means he’ll be surrounded with up-and-coming talent.

And he won’t be a salary cap burden.

Sure, there will be a great deal of pressure on Garoppolo to live up to his new deal. But if his five starts over the course of 2017 are any indication, he’ll be in excellent shape under head coach Kyle Shanahan and no longer has to live under the shadow of his former teammate with the New England Patriots, Tom Brady.

Speaking of those Pats…
