No. 29: The 1957 “Alley Oop” Catch by R.C. Owens

A week after owner Tony Morabito’s death, the 49ers experienced yet another magical moment. This time, the play came from 49ers legendary quarterback Y.A. Tittle on a last-second touchdown pass to wide receiver R.C. Owens.

The 49ers were trailing 31-28 in the waning seconds of the fourth quarter when Tittle tossed a desperate 41-yard pass in Owens’ direction hoping for a miracle.

It happened. Although one can thank Owens’ phenomenal leaping abilities for the incredible reception.

The play later became known as the “alley oop” catch thanks to what Owens was able to do. And San Francisco came away with the shocking 35-31 victory en route to the playoffs.
