No. 4: “Young Gets Away Again”

The late Lon Simmons’ call of quarterback Steve Young’s 49-yard rush for a game-winning (yes, game-winning) touchdown on October 30, 1998 sums up one of the top-five moments in 49ers history.

With No. 1 quarterback Joe Montana sidelined with an injury, Young had his chance to showcase his skills against a Minnesota Vikings team that would eventually finish with an 11-5 record that season.

With the pocket collapsing in the fourth quarter, Young was able to scramble, evade and break tackles from Minnesota’s defense.

And the legendary broadcaster’s words said it all.

“Gets away gain, goes to the 40, gets away again, to the 35, cuts back at the 30, to the 20, the 15, the 10 – he dives, touchdown 49ers!”

Like so many other moments, Young’s mad scramble has become an iconic piece in NFL history.
