No. 4: Jeff Garcia Completes the Epic Comeback versus the Giants
When: January 5, 2003
The 49ers were all but finished when they were hosting the New York Giants in the 2003 NFC Divisional round at Candlestick Park.
San Francisco was trailing 38-14 in the third quarter. This game was all but over.
But nobody told the Niners.
Quarterback Jeff Garcia helped engineer a major comeback — perhaps the most memorable in the playoffs before the New England Patriots’ come-from-behind win in Super Bowl LII.
Still trailing 38-22 at the start of the fourth quarter, Garcia found wide receiver Terrell Owens for a touchdown right away, followed by a successful two-point conversion attempt.
38-30.
San Francisco’s defense held, kicker Jeff Chandler converted a 25-yard field goal.
Another defensive stand, and then Garcia found wide receiver Tai Streets for a 13-yard go-ahead touchdown.
A controversial Giants field-goal attempt ensured San Francisco’s victory. But Garcia’s pass to complete the comeback stands high on our top 10.
