No. 7: Steve Young Gets the Monkey off His Back in Super Bowl XXIX
When: January 29, 1995
The 49ers were going to stomp all over the San Diego Chargers in Super Bowl XXIX, and everyone knew it.
The only question was how one-sided it was going to be.
And for quarterback Steve Young, who was still living in the shadows of one, Joe Montana, the game would provide a platform for the next franchise quarterbacking great to cement his own legacy.
Young did, tossing a record-setting six touchdown passes and posting a passer rating of 134.8 — nearly unheard of in a Super Bowl.
All this led to a lopsided 49-26 walloping of the Chargers and Young getting the game’s MVP award.
On the sidelines, Young was heard exclaiming, “would somebody please get this monkey off my back?”
He sure did.
