No. 9: John Brodie Sneaks It In versus the Vikings

When: December 27, 1970

Nearly 50 years ago, the 49ers enjoyed some phenomenal play from quarterback John Brodie, as he led San Francisco to the league’s top-scoring offense and a 10-3-1 record en route to both a Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro nod.

And his efforts also led the Niners to a date with the 12-3 Minnesota Vikings in the divisional round.

The Vikings got out to a seven-point lead, but San Francisco answered back with 10 points of its own. What proved to be the difference was a one-yard sneak by Brodie in the fourth quarter, putting the Niners up 17-7 and making a Vikings’ late touchdown score all but meaningless.

Brodie also finished the game with 201 passing yards and another touchdown through the air. But the sneak cemented this play forever into San Francisco history.
