San Francisco 49ers. 30. team. 42. . W, 31-21 vs. Giants. Previous:

For the first time all season, the 49ers can actually climb a spot in our NFL power rankings after coming away with a win.

The Niners’ 31-21 victory over the hapless Giants has a few associated storylines worth mentioning. First, quarterback C.J. Beathard isn’t going to simply hand over the reins over to Jimmy Garoppolo just yet. Not without a competition, at least.

Beathard was excellent, going 19-of-25 for 288 yards, three combined touchdowns (two in the air and another rushing) against one interception for a passer rating of 123.4. It was easily the best game of his still-young career.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan elected to run the ball, which hadn’t happened in recent weeks, and that worked too. San Francisco runners averaged 5.6 yards per carry, which took a lot of pressure off Beathard who, perhaps uncharacteristically, wasn’t sacked on the day.

And, of course, there was the emotional celebration from wide receiver Marquise Goodwin after his 83-yard touchdown score. Read this, and you’ll understand why. It’s impossible not to be touched by that.

Overall, the 49ers have to feel pretty good about shedding the winless moniker. Judging by the video below, they sure do:
