49ers film room: Top 10 plays from Week 5 vs. Colts
By Chris Wilson
George Kittle 19-yard reception (No. 6)
Four plays later, and after a failed third-down attempt, the 49ers have a 4th-and-1 on the Colts’ 40-yard line. The Niners line up with 22 personnel in I-Formation, with both tight ends on the right side of the formation.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan calls a play-action pass, with a mesh over the middle, and a “Flat-7” route combination to the right.
Running back Matt Breida does a great job quickly undercutting blitzing linebacker John Simon to the ground. Since offensive linemen Joe Staley and Brandon Fusco do poor jobs of blocking their defenders, Brian Hoyer is forced to make an off-balance throw to George Kittle, who gets behind cornerback Vontae Davis.
The lofted pass barely makes its way to Kittle, who makes an athletic play for the reception and a 49ers first down.
Win probability: +18% (9% to 27%)
