Quarterback Brian Hoyer

A year removed from quarterback Brian Hoyer throwing zero interceptions on 200 pass attempts with the Chicago Bears, San Francisco’s starter now has four picks tossed on 148 attempts.

That’s not good. Neither is his 67.9 passer rating — 30th out of 32 starting quarterbacks this season thus far.

Hoyer was 24-of-49 for 234 yards and that lone interception in Week 4, often missing his targets when they were wide open.

According to Jeff Deeney of Pro Football Focus, Hoyer is much more effective in play action:

This requires the Niners to run the ball, and one would have thought it was working, as running back Carlos Hyde was averaging 4.8 yards per carry. But on only 16 attempts, one has to wonder why San Francisco elected to get pass happy in the second half.

Especially when they weren’t trailing.

Regardless, it’s becoming clear Hoyer won’t have too much success with a relatively lackluster 49ers offense this season. And while fans might start calling for rookie QB C.J. Beathard — who saw one snap (a running play) in Week 4 — throwing the first-year signal-caller into the mix this early probably isn’t going to generate better results.

As it stands, San Francisco is stuck with this quarterbacking situation.
