Offensive Guard Laken Tomlinson

While Laken Tomlinson has been an upgrade over the offensive guard he replaced in Week 2, Zane Beadles, it isn’t as if the 49ers have made a vast improvement to their offensive line.

49ers quarterback Brian Hoyer wasn’t under anywhere near the same pass-rushing duress Carson Palmer was. But the Niners still allowed three sacks ant 10 quarterback hits.

Tomlinson was responsible for one of those sacks and also gave up three pressures, according to Pro Football Focus. And this probably explains his lowly 38.4 pass-blocking PFF grade thus far into 2017.

It’s possible Tomlinson is still adjusting to head coach Kyle Shanahan’s offense, and it might be a while before the former first-round pick sees a spike in his effectiveness.

Like the Niners’ situation at cornerback, though, there isn’t exactly a clear-cut upgrade available. With their would-have-been starter, Joshua Garnett, on injured reserve with a knee injury, San Francisco is going to have to make do with what it has.

It’s not ideal, rather just the reality of the situation.
