Running Back

Halfback: Carlos Hyde

Fullback: Kyle Juszczyk

Reserves: Matt Breida, Raheem Mostert

It was something of a shocking move to see the 49ers place rookie fourth-round draft pick, running back Joe Williams, on injured reserve at cut time.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero was first to report the transaction:

With Williams’ season done — he was having fumbling issues anyway — the door is open for Carlos Hyde to thrive in the No. 1 role. He’s in a contract year, so Hyde will likely try to exceed the so-so performances we’ve seen over his career.

But don’t overlook backup runners Matt Breida and Raheem Mostert. Breida, an undrafted free agent, was one of the better storylines during training camp and the preseason.

Mostert, who made real strides during the preseason, also managed to hang onto a roster spot.

Still, it wouldn’t be a shock to see San Francisco make a move here to find depth, if needed.
