NFL power rankings: League-wide look for each team as preseason starts
By Peter Panacy
The Philadelphia Eagles needed two things this offseason — wide receivers and cornerbacks.
Philly’s needs on the offensive side of the ball were addressed by signing free-agent wideouts Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith. Both have their concerns heading into this season, but both are also an upgrade over what the Eagles had a year ago at this time.
But the signing that should help was the acquisition of running back LeGarrette Blount.
Paired with do-it-all tailback Darren Sproles, Philadelphia’s offense could be pretty special with second-year quarterback Carson Wentz’s added weapons.
Taking a risk on cornerback Sidney Jones in the NFL Draft appears to have been the right move. Even if he’s not quite ready, fellow rookie Rasul Douglas has looked good in training camp.
The Eagles still aren’t in a position to contend with the Dallas Cowboys or New York Giants in the NFC East, but they’re much better than a lot of other teams on the rise right now.
