Steve Young, Quarterback

Career Stats with 49ers: 29,907 passing yards, 221 passing touchdowns, 86 interceptions, 65.8 completion percentage, 101.4 passer rating, 608 carries, 3,581 rushing yards, 37 rushing touchdowns

There’s another quarterback who has to be included on a 49ers Mt. Rushmore, and we’ll get to him shortly.

But it’s impossible to leave Hall of Fame QB Steve Young off any Niners monument.

Young actually holds a number of franchise records over the guy he ended up replacing, Joe Montana, and finally got the proverbial “monkey off his back” with a record-setting victory in Super Bowl XXIX over the San Diego Chargers.

And anyone who watched the video of Young’s celebration will never forget it:

So where would Young be placed?

Well, he’s not quite the best player the 49ers ever fielded. But he surely helped contribute to San Francisco’s No. 1 all-time performer, so he has to be placed right next to him.

That means going right where President Thomas Jefferson is on Mt. Rushmore.
