Losers: 49ers Backup Quarterbacks

According to both Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee and Grant Cohn of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, presumed starting quarterback Brian Hoyer got off to a strong start during this first week of OTAs.

The other two QBs likely to make the roster, Matt Barkley and rookie C.J. Beathard, not so much.

Safety Lorenzo Jerome managed to pick off Beathard on a tipped pass intended for wide receiver Victor Bolden. And, according to Cohn, Beathard managed to complete a mere three passes on eight attempts.

It’s way to early to pass any sort of long-term judgment on Beathard. He’ll need a long time to develop. But the guy presumably directly ahead of him, Barkley, didn’t exactly have a strong outing either.

Barkley was 7-of-12 under center and missed his intended targets by a wide margin, according to Cohn.

The quarterback will likely need some time to develop chemistry with his new receivers, and there’s little reason to assume he’ll see meaningful snaps this upcoming season anyway.

But, for what it’s worth, the backup quarterback situation may be in flux. There’s a hot story right there.
