2017 NFL Season: 5 teams with the worst quarterback situations in the league
By Peter Panacy
No. 4: Cleveland Browns
QB Depth Chart: Cody Kessler, Kevin Hogan, DeShone Kizer, Brock Osweiler
It’s actually kind of weird to think the Cleveland Browns, for once, don’t have the worst quarterbacking situation in the NFL this year.
They’re slightly worse off than the Texans, who at least have more offensive weapons with which to work. But the Browns surely aren’t as bad as some of the other teams on this list.
No, veterans Cody Kessler, Kevin Hogan nor Brock Osweiler are going to inspire any sort of long-term confidence. Kessler likely starts this season, but at least Cleveland made a long-term investment with one of its many early draft picks to try to find a plausible solution.
This comes in the form of former Notre Dame QB DeShone Kizer.
Not long ago, Kizer may have been considered the best quarterbacking prospect heading into 2017. While his efforts in college last year weren’t too stellar, Kizer may have had the most upside of any quarterback in this year’s draft class.
And Cleveland didn’t have to reach to grab him. That’s another good thing.
But Kizer, like so many QBs entering their first year in the NFL this season, won’t start right away. He’ll likely stand by and develop over the entirety of 2017.
So the remaining situation in Cleveland is still bad. But at least the Browns made some good decisions without reaching or getting desperate.
The same can’t be said of the next team on our list.
