Not Quite on the List: San Francisco 49ers

QB Depth Chart: Brian Hoyer, Matt Barkley, C.J. Beathard

Some may argue the 49ers should be listed as one of those teams with a bad quarterback situation.

And for the others who feel the Niners shouldn’t be on this list at all, well, we’re a 49ers site. Deal with it.

Anyway, San Francisco hit this offseason with exactly zero quarterbacks on its roster. Colin Kaepernick opted out of his two-year deal, and fellow QBs Blaine Gabbert, Christian Ponder and Thad Lewis also hitting the free-agent market.

Bringing in quarterbacks Brian Hoyer, Matt Barkley and drafting former Iowa QB C.J. Beathard doesn’t exactly sound like an upgrade.

Yet the Niners may be in a better quarterback situation than you think.

Hoyer, a 31-year-old journeyman, actually worked under head coach Kyle Shanahan when both were with the Cleveland Browns in 2014. And Hoyer tossed a career-high 3,326 passing yards and an NFL-best 13.7 yards per reception that season.

He knows Shanahan’s system, and the weapons at his disposal now are vastly superior to what the Browns had back in 2014.

Even NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport praised Hoyer on a recent interview with San Francisco’s KNBR 680.

Barkley isn’t exactly an ideal backup, and Beathard won’t start this season. So it’s anything but a perfect situation in Santa Clara.

Yet it’s good enough to keep the NIners out of the five worst situations overall.
