Linebacker (6)

Middle Linebacker: NaVorro Bowman, Brock Coyle

Strong-Side Linebacker: Reuben Foster, Ray-Ray Armstrong

Weak-Side Linebacker: Malcolm Smith, Eli Harold

The 49ers may actually have a strong linebacker group again following the first-round addition of former Alabama standout Reuben Foster.

Foster’s shoulder is of concern, but all signs are pointing to him being ready to go when necessary.

NaVorro Bowman starts in the middle. There aren’t any questions there. The only question will be how the Niners elect to place Foster and free-agent pickup Malcolm Smith. Smith isn’t particularly good in pass coverage, which lends to the idea he’ll be on the weak side of the formation.

Foster’s coverage is good. But the 49ers may want to retain veteran linebacker Ray-Ray Armstrong in strict passing situations anyway. Remember, Armstrong has doubled as a safety.

Eli Harold and Brock Coyle’s ability to stay on the 53-man roster will hinge largely on their abilities to contribute on special teams.

This grouping also means veteran linebacker Ahmad Brooks is shown the door.
