No. 3: EDGE Tim Williams, Alabama

Collegiate Statistics

Another player with plenty of red flags is Alabama edge rusher Tim Williams. Notice a trend here?

Before we get into Williams’ non-fit with the 49ers, let’s reiterate general manager John Lynch’s stance on character and how it relates to what his roster will look like.

Lynch’s comments on the matter, via Jennifer Lee Chan of Niners Nation:

"I think once you set a vision, you’ve got to also let them know that we’re not going to have a lot of rules but the rules we have, we’re going to adhere to. That’s not just to do that, that’s because I’ve been there before, Kyle’s been there before and discipline’s a big part of this thing and accountability’s a big part of this thing. We’re going to have guys with great character, football character and we’re going to have guys that are interested in making their community a better place. That’s important to Kyle [Shanahan] and I and it’s important to Jed [York]."

Sure, San Francisco needs a strong presence at EDGE. With Aaron Lynch currently slated to be the team’s LEO, filling in at the right defensive end position, it’s clear an upgrade would be desired here.

Williams, unfortunately, already has an arrest under his belt. On top of that, Williams has reported issues with substance abuse, not unlike what the Dallas Cowboys had to endure with promising-yet-troubled defensive end Randy Gregory.

Nope. John Lynch and Co. won’t go there.
