Excitement: The 49ers Are In a Position of Power in the NFL Draft

Remember what was said about general manager John Lynch and his first NFL Draft?

Well, that’s an issue in later rounds. Certainly after Round 2.

But armed with the No. 2 overall pick, San Francisco essentially has it’s choice of any prospective talent, likely outside of Texas A&M EDGE Myles Garrett, who probably winds up going to the Cleveland Browns to kick off day one.

It’s going to be hard to “swing and miss” with this pick. Should Lynch want to bulk up the front seven, he could add Alabama linebacker Reuben Foster, Stanford defensive end Solomon Thomas or even Tennessee EDGE Derek Barnett.

If the secondary is more of a concern — it was on an earlier slide — Lynch could target a cornerback like Ohio State’s Marshon Lattimore. Perhaps a dynamic playmaking safety like fellow Buckeye Malik Hooker is the right call.

Yet if offense remains a major focal point, perhaps the Niners target a talented wide receiver or even a running back.

Oh, and the 49ers could trade down too and acquire more draft capital. It’s not a guarantee this happens. Just a possibility.

And San Francisco’s second pick in the draft, No. 34 overall, should be able to land first-round talent that slipped out of Round 1.

Not bad.
