5 Players the 49ers Must Avoid in NFL Free Agency
By Ken Wang
Quarterback Mike Glennon
It’s true that the 49ers need a quarterback. Currently, they don’t have a single one locked up under contract for the upcoming season. It’s also true, that paying a career-backup quarterback like Glennon a potential $15 million per year would be a huge mistake.
Last December, ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Chris Mortenson had this to say about Glennon’s upcoming free agency:
"Glennon is an unrestricted free agent and could fetch $13-15 million per year on his next deal — maybe more depending on the number of teams bidding."
Glennon actually had a solid rookie campaign. Back in 2013, he threw for 2,608 yards to go along with 19 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 13 starts. Despite those numbers, head coach Lovie Smith decided to go in another direction, giving journeyman Josh McCown the keys to the offense.
Since then, McCown has spent two years backing up new franchise quarterback, Jameis Winston, and has appeared in a total of zero regular season games.
Zero.
And yet he’s still expected to make eight figures.
That’s life in the NFL. Quarterbacks are valuable, so even the mediocre ones will command a large contract. Deshaun Watson is a player that the 49ers need to avoid in the upcoming draft because the only way they will be able to get him is with the second overall pick.
Mike Glennon is a player the 49ers need to avoid in free agency due to his ludicrous cost.
