No. 1: Nate Clements — Cornerback (2007)

Thus leads us to our worst free-agent pickup in 49ers history, cornerback Nate Clements.

The 49ers broke the bank for Clements, who was the top-rated corner on the market when they signed him to an eight-year, $80 million contract with $22 million guaranteed.

At the time, this made him the highest paid defensive player in NFL history.

Clements was decent in his career with the 49ers compiling 10 interceptions. But a shoulder injury in 2009 ultimately led to his decline, and he never could make his way back to Pro Bowl form.
