No. 4: Lawrence Phillips — Running Back (1998)

After short stints with the St. Louis Rams and Miami Dolphins, running back Lawrence Phillips came into his own with the Barcelona Dragons of NFL Europe, setting a record with 14 touchdowns.

He was then signed by the 49ers to return to the NFL in 1999.

His career with the 49ers will be remembered only by the lack of blocking and a play that would end Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young’s career, as seen in the above video.

He missed picking up a blitz assignment that led to an Aeneas Williams sack, and eventual career-ending concussion for Young. Phillips off-the-field issues derailed his career, and he was waived at the end of the season.

Phillips passed away in jail in 2016 at the age of 40.
