Running Back

Halfback: Carlos Hyde

Fullback: free agent

Head coach Kyle Shanahan utilizes a fullback in his offense, unlike what former head coach Chip Kelly had in his base schemes.

A draft target could be in play here, but it’s likely Shanahan wants to target someone with whom he’s worked. Perhaps Atlanta Falcons fullback Patrick DiMarco, who is a free agent this offseason.

At halfback, don’t expect anyone else but No. 1 tailback Carlos Hyde.

Hyde remains the 49ers’ No. 1 offensive weapon, and he’s another player who could thrive under Shanahan this upcoming season.

The only question is Hyde’s health. Aside from his rookie 2014 campaign, Hyde has yet to enjoy a fully healthy year at the pro level. Spelling him will be of the utmost importance, so look for the 49ers to add another running back in the later rounds of the NFL Draft.
