Cornerbacks

Active Roster: Tramaine Brock, Jimmie Ward, Chris Davis, Keith Reaser, Rashard Robinson, Will Redmond

Cut: Dontae Johnson, Marcus Cromartie, Prince Charles Iworah,

Tramaine Brock and Jimmie Ward have long been entrenched as the 49ers’ starting cornerbacks, and all the preseason intrigue has come behind that duo.

Former undrafted free agent Chris Davis did not play a snap against San Diego having already caught the eye with his performances from the slot, ensuring the nickel corner job is his own with sticky coverage and solid tackling, though he will want to forget the clash with the Green Bay Packers.

Third and fourth-round rookies Will Redmond and Rashard Robinson were never likely to be cut, and Robinson strengthened his case with a pick in the Chargers game.

Instead the battle not to be the odd one out was between Keith Reaser and Dontae Johnson, whose presence late in the contest with the Chargers provided a big indication as to who won that fight.

Reaser also did not play in the finale, with his speed, which was showcased in an excellent display against the Denver Broncos, likely helping him knock Johnson – who could at one point have been considered the future of the Niners’ secondary – off the roster.
