Tight End Vance McDonald

Fourth-year tight end Vance McDonald is enjoying the best preseason of his pro career. Through two games, he’s hauled in a combined five receptions for 92 yards and this incredible 43-yard touchdown grab versus Houston.

McDonald’s reputation thus far includes his poor hands, although efforts like the ones we’ve seen over these first two preseason games are a good sign.

It’s important, given the Niners’ questions at wide receiver and under center.

San Francisco is still trying to figure out which wideouts step up behind No. 1 guy Torrey Smith. Additionally, the 49ers haven’t exactly locked into a starting quarterback either.

If tight ends truly are a quarterback’s best friend, especially in the red zone, some sort of chemistry between McDonald and the Niners’ first-team passer will be inherent in ensuring San Francisco’s offense has some sort of rhythm.

Green Bay’s defense, while nothing on par with what the Broncos’ first-team unit offered last weekend, should prove to be a solid challenge.

If anything, fans should be able to tell whether or not McDonald is on an upward trend.

Even if it’s a little late in coming.
