San Francisco 49ers: 5 Players Who Should be Cut by Week 1
No. 3, C Marcus Martin
Known by some as “the Green Room Bust” for his long wait on draft day, center Marcus Martin has been awful so far for the 49ers. He’s inconsistent and shows none of the power or explosiveness that got him drafted.
In 2014, Martin took over for an injured Daniel Kilgore at center. Martin wasn’t too terrible as a rookie. He played in eight games with eight starts and was certainly not the reason the 49ers missed the playoffs for the first time since 2010. He improved each week and showed a little bit of promise.
2015 was a different story. Martin played both right guard and center. The switching of positions hurt him, as he was even worse than his rookie year with inconsistency. Finally, Kilgore came back and relieved us fans of Martin, but what will happen this year?
When Martin was drafted, the feeling was kind of like when Tavon Austin was drafted by the now Los Angeles Rams. Martin was young and not ready. Similarly to Anthony Davis, one could say he shouldn’t have played his first year.
But, during my research for this article, I noticed that pro-football-reference.com gave Martin a four and five approximate value for his first two seasons. Austin’s were six and four, jumping to seven in his third year. Maybe Martin can do the same?
Anthony Davis’ first four years of Approximate Value (excluding the injury riddled 2014 season) went:
2010-Seven
2011-Eight
2012-Eight
2013-Eight
Martin probably won’t be Davis anytime soon.
