Jarryd Hayne should not have been allowed to walk

The USA is not North Korea, and you can’t force someone to stay on a football team if his desire to play the game is not there.

Why Jarryd Hayne decided to suddenly retire (whether the play book was too intense for him or not) or whether the lure of Olympic rugby was simply a bigger draw, the Niners management and coaches should have made a greater effort in keeping him to play the game.

Seriously, tutor anyone?

Perhaps the play book could have been “dumbed down” for him. Or Shaun Draughn or DuJuan Harris could have mentored him to help him learn the new play book.

After his initial nerves got to him, we never were given a proper look at Hayne, and he wasn’t given enough opportunities to show his wares on the field. When he did play, there was an essence of excitement which we hadn’t seen from this team in two years.

Now we will never know what impact he could have brought to the return game (which is still a weakness) if he was given ample opportunity in 2016.

You should never force someone to change their mind when it is made up. But if you believe in someone, and you see them succeeding at this endeavor, you should do everything in your power to talk to the person about what changes can be made to help them take the next step and achieve their goal.

The Niners should have done more to try and keep Hayne. His chances of making an Olympic rugby team this late in the game (and I grew up with rugby) is slim-to-none. It is a shame that he will be a league mystery.
