No. 7. 49ers quarterback Jim Plunkett —1976-1977

One might say, “how can a former Super Bowl MVP make this list?”

Easy, former 49ers quarterback Jim Plunkett didn’t do it in a red and gold jersey.

Plunkett was traded from the New England Patriots to the Niners in 1976. Plunkett came at one hefty price tag: San Francisco gave up two first-round NFL Draft picks in 1976 as well as a first- and a second-round pick in 1977.

Yes, three first-round selections! Even by today’s standards, that’s a massive blockbuster trade.

For that price, he was clearly viewed as the future of the franchise. However, he was far from that. In the two seasons he played with the 49ers, Plunkett managed to throw for a measly 3,285 yards, 22 touchdowns, 30 interceptions and finished with a record of 11-15 as a starter.

He was released by the Niners during the 1978 preseason, but at least he went on to find success with the Raiders later in his career.
