Eric Rogers

The door is wide open for a receiver to nail down the No. 2 wide receiver spot next to Torrey Smith, and Eric Rogers has as much of a chance as anybody to make that position on the depth chart his own.

Rogers visited 16 teams and had offers from 13 before deciding to ink a deal with the 49ers on the back of a hugely impressive campaign in the CFL with the Calgary Stampeders in which he snagged 87 receptions for 1,448 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns.

And, according to reports from OTAs, Rogers is already looking like somebody who can contribute at the NFL level.

Indeed, the Santa Rosa Press Democrat’s Grant Cohn was especially impressed with Rogers’ performance in the second open practice of OTAs:

"Completely outshined the starting split end, Quinton Patton, for the second-straight practice. Rogers made a team-high six catches, including two first-down catches during a one-minute drill. He ran crossers, slants, curls, outs, ins and go routes and excelled running each of them. I predict he will beat out Patton and start at split end Week 1."

That Rogers is impressing early is a very good sign for the 49ers and, with his significant size at 6’3″ and 210 pounds, catch radius and ability to attack the football in the air and grab it at its highest point, there is every chance he is able to replicate his CFL success in the NFL as long as his form in OTAs carries through to when the pads come on.
