Late-Round Draft Picks, Practice Squad Players and Undrafted Free Agents

Before we get into our actual list, we can’t overlook players who are almost continuously on the roster bubble.

For example, late-round draft picks (taken in Rounds 6 or 7) typically don’t wind up being anything more than depth options or additions to the practice squad. And, in most cases, undrafted free agents (UDFAs) are often signed to round out a team’s 90-man roster during offseason activities.

Take a look at the 49ers 90-man roster as it stands currently, and you’ll see more than a few names who are a long shot to make the regular-season roster.

At best, some will earn consideration to make the team in Week 1. Others may prove themselves adequately enough during the preseason to earn jobs from other teams if San Francisco releases them.

A few are destined for the practice squad, and others will wind up seeing their NFL dreams come to an abrupt end.

Such is the nature of professional football. So, to be fair to all those vying for roster spots, one should point out every player in this category is in a make-or-break situation this year.
