Grading Each 49ers Selection in the 2016 NFL Draft
Joshua Garnett, G, Stanford
Another win win for the 49ers!
Yes, Garnett was a great pick.
Though Mike Mayock of NFL Network, and many other draft pundits, had Garnett rated second at his position, and gave him a second round grade, the 49ers deserve credit for getting the player they targeted, even while selecting him before Kansas State’s Cody Whitehair.
Giving up their second, fourth, and sixth round choices, the Niners moved back into the first round and selected Garnett with pick No. 28 in round 1.
Garnett is a massive man, according to his NFL Draft profile on NFL.com. He stands 6’4″ and weighs 312 pounds.
Former coach David Shaw, of Stanford, had this to say about Garnett:
"“You’re getting a brilliant young man, and a tough son of a gun. He has some work to do as a pass protector, which he’s worked on every year. He can down block. He can pull. He’s physical and nasty. He’s ready for Sundays.”"
Being able to pull means that Garnett can move, which is vital in Kelly’s 49er offense, and being big fits what Baalke likes as well.
Again, that’s a win win.
Overall Grade: A+ or (10/10)
