San Francisco 49ers: What You Need to Know for 2016 NFL Draft
Draft Picks
As the draft begins, the 49ers have 12 picks in the draft. Normally, in each round, they’ll pick between fifth and seventh, rotating with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Baltimore Ravens, as all finished 5-11 last year. The picks are as follows:
Round 1, Pick 7 (7th overall)
Round 2, Pick 6 (37th overall)
Round 3, Pick 5 (68th overall)
Round 4, Pick 7 (105th overall)
Round 4, Pick 35 (133rd overall)—Compensatory pick for the loss of Chris Culliver to Washington.
Round 5, Pick 3 (142nd overall)—From San Diego due to trading back in the first round last year to draft Arik Armstead.
Round 5, Pick 6 (145th overall)
Round 5, Pick 35 (174th overall)—Compensatory pick for the loss of Perrish Cox to Tennessee.
Round 6, Pick 3 (178th overall)—From Dallas due to trading out of the seventh round last season.
Round 6, Pick 32 (207th overall)—From Denver as part of the Vernon Davis trade.
Round 6, Pick 36 (211th overall)—Compensatory pick for the loss of Frank Gore to Indianapolis.
Round 6, Pick 38 (213th overall)—Compensatory pick for the loss of Dan Skuta to Jacksonville.
The 49ers traded away their regular sixth-round pick to Minnesota for the services of Gerald Hodges, and their seventh-round pick to Denver as part of the Vernon Davis trade.
According to the Football Perspective Draft Value Chart, the 49ers have the fifth-most draft capital this year, thanks in large part to their high number of compensatory selections. On average, teams with the 49ers’ draft capital should expect to get about 61 points of value above just grabbing random street free agents over the next five years. That’s equivalent to one Torry Holt, Orlando Pace or Russell Wilson—or, perhaps more realistically, two or three quality starters. That should be the baseline this draft class is held to over the next 3-5 years.
