The tight end position for the 49ers has been an unproductive, inefficient position since the beginning of the 2014 season, when Vernon Davis suffered an ankle injury and rarely contributed after his two-touchdown performance against Dallas in Week 1. Since then, Davis was traded for this particular sixth-round pick, and the 49ers continued to experience below-average tight end production.

The bright spot appears to be Garrett Celek, as Vance McDonald proved to be inconsistent. East Carolina tight end Bryce Williams adds competition and depth.

On the field, Williams looks like he’s 7’0″ tall, but he’s listed as 6’6″. Williams consistently catches the ball at its highest point in contested situations and shows great concentration.

However, he does display some sloppy route-running at times and is an inefficient run blocker with poor technique.

COMPENSATORY PICK, Pick 211: Harlan Miller, CB, SE LOUISIANA

We’re getting to the point in the draft were it becomes slim pickings, and teams are looking to solidify their depth and practice squad talent and, maybe, even find a gem.

Look for the 49ers to add some depth and competition here, and Louisiana cornerback Harlan Miller has the potential to add a key component missing in 49ers pass defense: breaking up the pass and getting deflections. Miller displays an explosive quickness and jumps routes with ease, either deflecting or intercepting the pass.

His 4.57 speed is deceiving in the long passing game, as he makes up for it with his arm length (31 inches) and decent vertical jump (32 inches). He must get stronger and his tackling suffers as a result. He posted a six-rep score at the combine and a four-rep score at his pro day on the bench press. That rightfully scares some NFL scouts. However, this hasn’t stopped him from being a physical presence.
