San Fransisco 49ers: 5 Steps for a Successful 2016 NFL Draft
By Rob Lowder
Create Competitive Depth
With the majority of the 49ers selections taking place in the fourth (2), fifth (3) and sixth (4) round, it is imperative for Baalke that he find players capable of competing for a roster spot.
It is safe to assume that some of the picks may be dealt in possible trades, but there are four compensatory selections that cannot be traded. This guarantees pressure on Baalke to maximize his opportunity later in the draft and find starting talent, or at the very least, build quality depth.
Fortunately, Baalke has been fairly solid with his late round selections, as highlighted in a previous article:
"Aaron Lynch, starting outside linebacker, was taken in the fifth round. Quinton Dial, starting defensive tackle, was taken in the fifth round. Daniel Kilgore, starting center, was taken in the fifth round. Trent Brown, starting right tackle, was taken in the seventh round."
Competitive fire is essential for any roster in the NFL. It ensures that those who are chosen for the final 53-man roster have had to fight for the right to be there, and did so by showcasing to the coaching staff that they were capable of contributing. The 49ers will need significant contributions from these later round selections.
This is the sort of impact we have to expect from Baalke at this phase of the draft if he has any hopes of effectively and quickly rebuilding the franchise.
Fortunately for Baalke, there is a new mind in the building capable of lending a hand, especially in regards to offensive talent.
