San Francisco 49ers: 10 Pros Who Could Lose Jobs to 2016 NFL Draft Prospects
By Peter Panacy
Linebacker Corey Lemonier
The 49ers haven’t gotten much of an investment out of fourth-year pro linebacker Corey Lemonier ever since San Francisco traded up to get him in Round 3 of the 2013 NFL Draft.
Since that point, Lemonier has registered a mere 27 tackles, one sack and three passes defended — certainly not the best numbers for the once-prolific Auburn pass-rusher.
Lemonier has largely been relegated to backup duties behind starting linebackers Aaron Lynch and Ahmad Brooks. Brooks may also be on the roster bubble towards the start of the season, for reasons we’ll get to in a bit. But if the 49ers look to add OLB talent, it’s very possible Lemonier finds himself out of a job altogether.
Second-year pro Eli Harold has already surpassed Lemonier on the depth chart and ended up having more defensive snaps than his predecessor last season — 344 to 275, per Pro Football Focus (subscription required).
And with defensive end, turned edge-rusher Tank Carradine likely to see more snaps on the outside, Lemonier’s chances look even bleaker.
If the 49ers elect to add a dynamic outside linebacker like UCLA’s Myles Jack or Georgia’s Leonard Floyd via the draft, Lemonier’s tenure would be bleak at best.
San Francisco will likely keep Lemonier on the roster until the final cuts are to be made. But signs aren’t looking too good for him right now.
