2016 NFL Draft: 49ers Quarterback Big Board
By Jerod Brown
Jacoby Brissett-North Carolina State
As a two-year starter for the North Carolina State Wolfpack, Jacoby Brissett put up some impressive statistics. He threw for 5,268 yards with 43 touchdowns and just 11 interceptions. In those two seasons, he added an additional 899 yards rushing the ball and scored nine touchdowns.
Brissett would bring the skill set to succeed in a Chip Kelly offense from a statistical viewpoint. He manages possessions with few turnovers and is adequate as a runner to at least threaten the zone-read run plays that Kelly employs.
Where Brissett shines from a physical makeup, he lacks the efficiency and consistency that Kelly will expect from his quarterback. Sure, Brissett wasn’t intercepted terribly often but he was highly inconsistent as a passer, finishing 2015 with a completion percentage at an even 60 percent.
As a passer, Brissett is overly-reliant on his arm strength and willingly throws off of his back foot often. These throws, with almost no base under them, will be easily intercepted when he joins an NFL team.
The 49ers will certainly put Brissett on their board based on his size and production in college but he’ll need to address the issues in his throwing base before ever seeing the field. The impressive defensive backfields in the NFC West would feast off some of his throws on Sundays.
