David Morgan II-Tight End-University of Texas at San Antonio

College Statistics

The 49ers probably don’t need another tight end. As the offseason training program begins, they have Vance McDonald, Garrett Celek, Blake Bell and Busta Anderson all battling to be the top tight ends in Chip Kelly’s offense.

The team could, however, determine that they have seen enough of McDonald to move him to another team in an effort to garner more draft picks either this year or next. Draft picks are like gold for Trent Baalke right now as he spends the next two years rebuilding this roster.

If the 49ers determine that tight end could be a need this year and beyond, they should address that need late in the draft by selecting University of Texas at San Antonio tight end David Morgan II.

Morgan measures in at 6’4″ and 262 pounds. He excels as a blocking tight end and will get nasty in the run game. The blocking technique he shows as an in-line tight end would rival some of the mid-tier tackles in this class.

Despite being a relatively lumbering mover, UTSA found ways to make him the featured receiver of their offense. And he found ways to make plays like the following.

For a man of his size and skill set, that’s absolutely unbelievable. He routinely made big plays for the offense at UTSA. He won’t generate the love that some of the more fluid athletes at the top of the class will, but he is a strong player that enjoys contact at all levels of the field.

The 49ers might not believe that tight end is a need but Morgan would enter the team as one of the best blockers that could line up at tight end. Head coach Chip Kelly used both Zach Ertz and Brent Celek in his offense in Philadelphia. Morgan wouldn’t be a primary receiver but he would be a useful player in creating a varied offense.

Best of all, the 49ers should find him available in the fifth round or later in the 2016 NFL Draft.
