Needs the 49ers Must Address

Pick a position on the 49ers’ 53-man roster and, chances are, they need an upgrade or reinforcements there.

In reality, San Francisco has just a handful of positions where talent and/or depth isn’t a problem: safety, kicker, punter and tight end (arguably).

So where should we start?

It’s a difficult question to ask and one that is largely based on what analysts’ opinions are regarding positions of most importance. Earlier this month, Niner Noise broke down the top-five needs San Francisco has in the draft. But let’s do a brief recap.

Wide Receiver

Veteran wideout Anquan Boldin is still a free agent and, aside from Torrey Smith, the Niners lack any proven commodities here. Developing receivers like Bruce Ellington and Quinton Patton may not be the answer, and former-redshirted second-year pro DeAndre Smelter has yet to take the field in NFL action.

Inside Linebacker

The 49ers have inside linebacker NaVorro Bowman and a gaping hole alongside him. Fellow linebackers Michael Wilhoite and Gerald Hodges are better suited as backups.

Remember the days when San Francisco was strong up the middle?

Edge/Pass-Rusher

Linebackers Aaron Lynch and Ahmad Brooks led the team with 6.5 sacks apiece last season. But Brooks is entering the twilight of his career, and the 49ers will likely be seeking a long-term solution — a need, considering the team finished last season 29th in the league with just 28 sacks.

Offensive Line

San Francisco inked offensive guard Zane Beadles to a free-agent deal this offseason to replace Alex Boone, who departed the team via free agency. But the right side of the offensive line remains in doubt. O-linemen Andrew Tiller and Trent Brown have some promise, and retired right tackle Anthony Davis seems to be returning.

Yet this group still seems to be more of a liability than a strength

Quarterback

Quarterback Colin Kaepernick is still with the 49ers until he isn’t. Recent trade rumors are still floating, and it’s possible a change of scenery could be what’s best for all parties involved. Could head coach Chip Kelly turn Kap’s career around? Or is Blaine Gabbert a better option under center?

And what are the long-term desires at the most critical position in all of sports?

Those are among the biggest of Niner needs in the draft. But one could easily add defensive line depth, solidarity at cornerback and playmaking tight ends to the mix. Heck, even special teams and running back could be a part of the equation.

So the 49ers needs are many as the draft approaches. How will things shake up?
