49ers Draft Wide Receiver Corey Coleman in Round 1

OK, so the 49ers likely won’t be using the No. 7 pick on 5’11”, 194-pound Baylor wide receiver Corey Coleman.

Listed as the No. 23 overall prospect in the draft, per CBS Sports, Coleman simply doesn’t have the value for general manager Trent Baalke to spend such a high pick on his talents. Should Coleman be drafted at, or around, his CBS ranking, the Niners would have to either trade down in Round 1 or trade up as described on the first slide.

And it isn’t as if the 49ers lack interest.

According to NFL Network’s Rand Getlin, the Niners are one of a few teams scheduled to meet with the Baylor product in advance of the draft.

Coleman may be the perfect fit for head coach Chip Kelly’s offense. The type of offense he thrived in while at Baylor may translate directly over to what Kelly may try to do.

San Francisco also has considerable need at the position. With Anquan Boldin unsigned, and wideouts Quinton Patton and Bruce Ellington not exactly wowing anyone, Torrey Smith remains the only proven commodity here.

Adding a player like Coleman may be the bold move the 49ers make early.
