San Francisco 49ers: 10 Players with a Lot to Prove in 2016
By Peter Panacy
Wide Receiver Bruce Ellington
Third-year veteran wide receiver Bruce Ellington hasn’t exactly left his stamp on the offense since being signed in Round 4 of the 2014 NFL draft.
Since that point, Ellington has hauled in a mere 19 receptions for 215 yards and two touchdowns. And he’s been no better than OK in the return game.
True, injuries and a possible lack of use have hindered Ellington’s development. But the selection of head coach Chip Kelly, who likes big-bodied wide receivers, likely pushes Ellington’s chances to remain with the team to the back burner.
Niner Noise author Jerod Brown speculates Ellington may not even make the Opening Day roster:
"For many reasons, Ellington has failed to produce consistently as a 49er. Certainly, former offensive coordinator Geep Chryst didn’t do Ellington any favors in his play-calling that essentially removed Ellington for entire games, despite Ellington providing a spark. But what if that was intentional and an early indication of the front office’s disappointment?"
Brown notes how the wide receiver position will be crowded alongside other players like Torrey Smith, Quinton Patton, DeAndre Smelter, Dres Anderson and, should he re-sign, Anquan Boldin. And there’s the possibility San Francisco adds yet another receiver in the draft or free agency.
So where would that leave Ellington?
The 5’9″, 197-pound wideout may not have a spot even if he has a strong training camp and preseason.
Next: WR Quinton Patton
