Round 5 (Compensatory): Kevon Seymour, CB, USC

This compensatory selection would be for the loss of Perrish Cox last offseason.

This late in the draft, you’re not drafting to fill needs as much anymore—you can’t count on picks this low becoming contributors. You’re looking for potential, a singular attribute you can highlight and build on—and maybe some roster tricks to expand the 53-man roster.

Kevon Seymour fits all of these categories. At 6’0” and 185 pounds, he has very good size, and he’s shown some instinctive, ball-hawking behavior when healthy, coming away with an interception in each of the last three seasons. He’s an aggressive tackler and fairly fluid out on the field.

He also suffered an ankle injury which kept him out of the Holiday Bowl, meaning Trent Baalke could slap that beloved NFI tag on him, keeping him on the roster to develop without taking up a roster slot. Baalke loves those guys and, while he’s had a mixed track record on those players, it’s likely he’ll take another one in 2016.

Other players considered:

  • Tavon Young, CB, Temple
  • Vincent Valentine, DT, Nebraska
  • Alex Redmond, G, UCLA
